11.5 Gradual Changes

English Notes
BSL Video

Gradual changing is when sign turns into another; this type of signing requires considerable skill and allows signers to link two ideas literally by changing one sign into another with very little change in handshape, movement or location of sign. In Dorothy Miles’ poem “Trio”, she changes the sign DARKNESS into a flying bat. In June Smith’s tale of “The Tree”, she switches subtly between showing the tree’s branches and showing the signs that describe the tree’s experience. The sign ‘PULL-A-BEER’ can be changed slightly to have a different meaning that is a rude meaning, ‘SEX’.
