19.30 Loan Translation
This is when there are two languages and one takes the meaning of a word or sign in a another language and uses it in their own. This occurs when there is no sign for a word or the person doesn’t know the sign for that word. For example, the sign MANCHESTER, some people may sign MAN + CHEST (rep) to mean MANCHESTER. This is an example of loan translation. The correct sign would be M + C for MANCHESTER. Another example is the shop ‘Boots’; some would sign BOOTS to mean the shop ‘Boots’.
