Makaton suits children or adults with learning difficulties or brain damage. It has a vocabulary of 500-600 signs, taken from BSL. It was created by three people named Margaret, Kathy and Tony, which is why it is called Ma-Ka-Ton, after the first parts of their names. Makaton is very different from BSL. It is not much more than a set of vocabulary items, whereas BSL is a full language with a full grammar. The two are very different indeed.
