Arbitrary Signs


In sign languages, there are some arbitrary signs. Arbitrary signs are frequently used for things that are not easily represented by visual signs (although there are plenty of such referents that still have visually motivated signs because of the use of metaphor – see below). E.g. WANT, NEVER, EXPECT, GOOD, BAD.
