This first list is of English words in use now, the other list is of "old-fashioned English words". The question is why the change occurred. Some people might be surprised to learn what this reason is.

  • commuter - season-ticket holder
  • cone (ice-cream) - cornet
  • dessert - sweet course
  • long-distance (telephone) - trunk
  • peanut - monkey-nut
  • radio - wireless
  • raincoat - mackintosh
  • scrambled eggs - buttered eggs
  • soft drinks - minerals
  • thriller - shocker
  • toilet - lavatory
